The 2023 LIV Golf League regular season is coming to a climactic finish with the eagerly anticipated LIV Jeddah, exclusively available for SuperSport viewers on DStv from Friday, October 13th to Sunday, October 15th.
DStv stands as the ultimate hub for golf enthusiasts, offering an unmatched selection of global golfing action. With DStv Stream, fans can catch their favourite golfers in real-time, wherever and whenever they please.
Held at the prestigious Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this tournament marks the conclusion of the regular season and paves the way for the highly anticipated Team Championship, charting the future for many LIV golfers.
The event represents the 13th tournament of the league’s inaugural full season. The lineup includes superstar names and major winners, such as the 2023 PGA Championship victor and 2023 US Ryder Cup Team selection, Brooks Koepka, the 2022 Open Champion Cameron Smith, World Golf Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson, the 2020 US Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau, and two-time major winners Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Martin Kaymer.
The individual standings promise intense competition, with a star-studded roster vying for the season-ending individual title. Players further down the standings face a crucial battle to secure their future, with those ranked 45th and below in the “Drop Zone” at season’s end facing relegation and the prospect of losing their LIV Golf status for the following year.
Currently, Cameron Smith leads the individual standings with 170 points, bolstered by victories in London and Bedminster. In-form American Talor Gooch, a three-time individual champion this season, closely trails the Australian with 162 points. LIV Golf Chicago champion Bryson DeChambeau sits in third place in the standings with 146 points.
Other contenders for a top-three finish include the 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah winner Brooks Koepka, and 4Aces GC captain Dustin Johnson, among others.
As the last opportunity to secure points in the individual standings, the pressure to excel in Jeddah intensifies. The top 24 players in the overall standings will secure their positions in the LIV Golf League for the next season. However, players finishing in the “Open Zone” (positions 25-44) may face trade or release by their respective teams. Those in positions 45 and below, situated in the “Drop Zone,” will be relegated and automatically qualify for the League’s promotional tournament, offering them a chance to reclaim their spot for the 2024 season.
In addition to the individual standings race, every player in the 48-man field has ample reason to make their scores count, as the final team standings following LIV Golf Jeddah will determine seeds 1-12 for the LIV Golf Team Championship in Miami the following week, with the top four teams receiving first-round byes.
“This is why I love what we’re doing,” said Paul Casey. “It’s the individual and the team element, and the individual element is rewarding to a certain level, and the team element is rewarding to a whole ‘nother level. They’re different. You can’t compare them, but boy, does it feel good to play well with these guys.”
