DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 2 — Tanzanian police have busted a gang of 17 cybercriminals involved in stealing money through computers and mobile phone networks, a cabinet minister said on Tuesday.
Faustine Ndugulile, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said the cybercriminals were arrested recently in the country’s Morogoro region during a special crackdown on cybercrime.
The minister revealed the information in the capital Dodoma during the signing of agreements between his ministry and contractors for the expansion of the National ICT Broadband Backbone.
“The 17 suspects also used the tech devices to insult innocent citizens and disseminate inaccurate information,” said Ndugulile.
Tanzania enacted the Cybercrimes Act in 2015, which criminalizes and penalizes a number of cyber activities such as data espionage, the publication of child pornography, the publication of false, deceptive, misleading, or inaccurate information.
