Karibib, Aug. 15 -– A man who was part of a suspected gang of poachers was shot and injured on the left leg when the farm owner found them with meat on his farm.
Three suspected poachers allegedly went into farm Kaliombo in the Karibib District at around 23h45 on Sunday evening with an intention to poach, but the farm owner allegedly found them and shot one of them on the left leg with a firearm.
It is alleged that the 65-year-old farm owner heard dogs barking on his farm premises after he was allegedly alerted by security guards about suspected poachers on his farm.
On investigation, he allegedly observed the three suspects with meat and armed with spears, and axe and they had three dogs.
The suspected poachers allegedly attempted to attack the farmer with spears, and he shot one of the poachers in the leg. The other two poachers reportedly fled in the cover of darkness.
An oryx carcass was recovered near the B2 road.
According to the Erongo police, the injured man was found lying on the ground, with a gunshot wound on his left lower leg. A spear and an axe were found in his black bag. He was identified as a habitual poacher from Karibib who has previous convictions.
He was taken to Karibib State clinic for medical treatment in a stable clinical condition, under police guard.
The police investigations further revealed that the suspects had been dropped at the farm by a white pick-up vehicle that would pick them up after the poaching expedition.
