WINDHOEK, MAY 20 – SWAPO Party Youth League Secretary Ephraim Nekongo has offered a message of condolence to the family and the Party itself after the passing on of former Vice President Nickey Iyambo.
“To the widow, children, family, SWAPO Party rank and file and the entire Namibian nation at large, on behalf of the SWAPO Party Youth League… and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to offer and extend our heartfelt condolence to you during this difficult time.”
In a statement, Nekongo describes Iyambo as a stalwart, stating: “An icon has fallen, a stalwart has gone silent forever, a freedom fighter, a compatriot and an erstwhile Son of the soil has passed on.”
He added” A dark cloud has descended on the Iyambo family and indeed the entire Namibian nation.”
Nekongo said that Iyambo had served with selfless leadership and dedication and applauded him for “his revolutionary and immense contribution to the liberation struggle of the Namibian independence.”
“We thank him for his wisdom and inspiration. As we mourn his death, we also celebrate his life and the remarkable role he played in the SWAPO Party and the Republic of Namibia,” read the statement.
Iyambo, according to Nekundi, was among the earliest SWAPO members to go into exile and helped establish SWAPO’s close relationship with Julius Nyerere, first president of Tanzania. He served as the first ever Vice President of Namibia from 2015 until 2018. – email@example.com
