WINDHOEK, 29 JUN – The Russian Government has welcomed the latest talks between Korean President Kim Jong-Un and United States of America (USA) President Donald Trump.
During a media briefing at the Russian Embassy in Namibia here on Thursday, Political Affairs Press Attaché Yury Tsvetkov stated that his country believes that the normalisation of US-North Korean relations is an essential part of the settlement of Korean Peninsula issues.
“We have a positive opinion of the US President’s statement following the summit that it is inappropriate to hold war games during negotiations,” Tsvetkov said.
He added that they are confident that stopping provocative actions is an essential step towards defusing tensions around the peninsula and establishing an atmosphere of trust there.
On Russia’s role in peaceful settlement of the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula, Tsvetkov said North-Korea’s successful launches of liquid and solid-fuel ballistic missiles of various ranges, led to the adoption of new sanction resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) 2371 and 2375.
“Along with the implementation of the nuclear programme in the last years, Pyongyang has significantly stepped up its work on developing its own missile delivery system.”
He added that these systems are meant for Weapons of Mass Destruction and were in violation of the requirements of the relevant resolutions of the UNSC and they led to sanctions being imposed on North Korea, which Russia as a permanent member of the UNSC, one of the architects and depositary of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons, supported.
Russia has further called on all interested parties to join political-diplomatic efforts, in the context of the implementation of the Russian-Chinese road map, to comprehensively settle the problems of the Korean peninsula, including those of a nuclear nature.
“Russia also believes that under pressure and attempts to impose sanctions bypassing the UNSC, the situation can hardly be improved,” said Tsvetkov.
