WINDHOEK, 22 AUG – The Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare will explore mechanisms to roll out a grant scheme for the unemployed and vulnerable.
Poverty eradication minister, Zephania Kameeta said this Tuesday during a three-day Social Protection System workshop in Swakopmund.
His statement made available after delivery said there are number of vulnerable and marginalised Namibians who are excluded from the current social welfare grants, and the workshop would be discussing matters relating to how the situation can be remedied.
Kameeta said through the blueprint on wealth redistribution and poverty eradication, the ministry will provide a basic income for those living in extreme poverty, with the aim of both helping and empowering them.
Giving an example on social protection issues, he said when a vulnerable child reaches the age of 16, he or she falls out of the social protection system, unless they are disabled.
The workshop will discuss social protection issues to provide a way forward and improve its effectiveness, efficiency and impact in order to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality.
“The discussion will give stakeholders an opportunity to consider various policy options and discuss advantages and limitations of it and provide recommendations to guide the development of the Social Protection Policy framework for Namibia,” he said.
The first workshop was hosted in May 2017 and was held in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, an intergovernmental economic organisation with 36 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. – NAMPA
