WINDHOEK, 18 JUL – Namibian political parties should strive towards achieving 50/50 gender representation, Deputy Minister of Gender and Child Welfare, Lucia Witbooi has said.
Witbooi was speaking on Wednesday at the launch of a project titled ‘Promoting Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in Political Representation in Namibia’ initiated by the Women’s Action for Development (WAD).
She said political parties should create an environment that will enable them to adopt gender sensitive policies and legislative framework that is conscious of gender equality during the nomination of party leaders and representatives.
“Women should be given equal footing as their male counterparts in all spheres of life and that includes the political field as well,” she said.
Witbooi noted that Namibia had already taken huge strides towards gender equality in the National Assembly where 46 of the 104 members, about 44 per cent, were female, a feat she described as laudable.
At the same occasion, WAD Executive Director Salatiel Shinedima said the absence of women in political leadership limits a fair and just contribution to issues discussed at leadership level.
“It is an open secret that some male politicians feel threatened by the proposal of 50/50 because they fear losing their positions to women,” said Shinedima.
Highlighting the objective of the project, he said it aims to promote women’s rights and gender equality in political representation in Namibia.
He further said it would sensitise the public on the importance of equal gender representation in politics at both national and regional level.
“Women in politics will be empowered with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to fully participate in the electoral process as candidates representing their political parties,” Shinedima said.
The two-year project was funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund with an amount of N.dollars 2.9 million.
