WINDHOEK, 10 JUL – Namibian Police Force Oshana Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Hilja Haipumbu dismissed allegations that police did not respond on time to an incident that led to the death of a pensioner.
In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Haipumbu noted that when the police arrived at Oshoopala village, which is situated about 25 kilometres west of Ondangwa, the pensioner was already dead.
“The very moment the report was received, the police went to attend and the officer on duty even called me while at the scene,” she said.
Kambenge Johannes, 97, died instantly after she was hacked to death with an axe Wednesday night last week at Oshoopala village in the Uukwiyu-Ushona constituency of the Oshana Region.
Haipumbu said the caller at about 20h00 informed the police that there was someone being violent at home and beating a housemate.
Upon the police officer’s arrival at the scene, it was discovered that the male victim who was being attacked ran to the neighbour’s house to hide, whereby the accused in the matter followed him.
“At the neighbour’s house, he found the deceased sleeping in one of the huts and hacked her,” said Haipumbu.
The accused, Mabelane Mabele Bishop, 29, fled the scene but was arrested and appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he was remanded in custody.
