LUSAKA, Feb. 6 — The Police in western Zambia’s Mongu district have thwarted a ploy by some people who attempted to sell a 17-year-old male pupil with albinism at a local school, a spokesperson said on Monday.
Danny Mwale, the deputy police spokesperson, said 12 suspects have since been arrested, while 12 mobile phones used for communication by the suspects have been confiscated.
The police also recovered some medicine labelled as “Diazepam”, which the suspects confessed they wanted to give to the victim once he was captured, he added.
“Investigations revealed that a plot to traffic a named albino who is a learner at Sefula combined school for the blind in Mongu district of Western Province started in October 2022, and a picture of the victim was sent to the purported buyers,” he said in a statement.
The suspects include teachers, a school matron, a nurse, a taxi driver, and two people working in a barbershop.
People with albinism face attacks in some parts of Africa, including Zambia, driven by superstitions that their bones and body can be used to make charms that bring wealth or good luck. (Xinhua)
