OUTJO, 24 JUN – Outjo Mayor, Samuel !Oe-Amseb on Friday announced the names of six people the municipality found befitting for feeder streets at Outjo to be named after, based on their achievements in politics, professional careers, education and music.
!Oe-Amseb revealed the names at the 120th Anniversary of Outjo’s existence on Friday at the Etoshapoort Stadium.
According to !Oe-Amseb, many streets here carry meaningless names and needed to be renamed after some iconic people who have excelled in their personal, political and professional lives.
He said the municipality street naming committee, which comprises local authority councillors, municipality officials and community members, agreed to change and rename some of the major tarred streets such as Buitekant, Lang, Koedoe and Zebra.
Buitekant Street was named after the late Kunene Governor, Angelika Muharukua while the nearly 3-kilometre long Lang Street was named after Vice President, Nangolo Mbumba.
The first-ever Kunene Regional Governor, Ernst Fanuel Amporo was honoured with the renaming of Hospital Street.
The late Salmon Salath //Hoeseb, who worked as a journalist for a long time at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, was also recognised with a new street named after him.
Zebra Street was replaced by Sagarias Kalux Karunga Street, named after an Outjo-born musician and producer of Damara Punch music.
Koedoe Street was named after Dr Japie van Zyl, a specialist in scientific space knowledge from Outjo, who now lives and works in the United States of America.
“This exercise is just the start. It is not the end of it, as we have many deserving residents in and outside Outjo who need to be accorded this honour and respect based on what they have achieved in life,” said !Oe-Amseb.
The anniversary celebrations were attended by more than 1 000 residents of the town, visitors and officials of the Kunene Regional Council.
