Namibia to send Women’s Basketball Team to inaugural African Beach Games
WINDHOEK, JUNE 12 – The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) is sending a 3X3 Women’s National Basketball Team to represent the country at the first ever African Beach Games, the federation said on Wednesday.
The official duration of the competition is from 14th to 23rd June 2019, but the team of four are set to leave the country on Sunday 16 June for the Island of Sal, Cape Verde, where the games will take place.
Preliminary Games were held in Windhoek in May, where the team was chosen from a pool of much potential from which they stood out by winning a tournament. The winner of the tournament was the basis on which the ladies gained their national colors as the 3X3 Women’s National Basketball Team.
NBF Secretary General, Ramah Mumba said that this is the first time that Namibia is recognized on such a platform in the sports of basketball and he could not be prouder of the ladies.
“The team has already made us very proud by being part of such a historic event in sports history, specifically basketball.”
NBF Development Officer, Malakia Matias, the team’s chaperone said “Hopefully this serves to remind the young players that there is indeed much to look forward to in the basketball and sports in general”.
One of the players, Victoria Netumbo said “we will wear our national colors with pride and we appreciate the support coming from everybody. We will do our utmost best to make everyone proud”.
The African Beach Games will cater for 11 sports codes, all of which will be played under the “beach” setting.
Cape Verde will be hosting these inaugural games with 11 sports as mentioned, 54 countries and 1000 athletes. This is history for the Namibian country but moreover for Africa as this will be the first time ever that games of such nature are held on the continent. – firstname.lastname@example.org
