WINDHOEK, June 27 — Namibia is currently engaging other members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to allow their citizens to travel with a temporary travel document instead of passports which are in short supply, Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration Frans Kapofi said Thursday.
He said that Namibia is struggling to supply passports to its citizens because difficulties in finding a supplier who matches the country’s procurement rules.
“We further wish to inform the public, that the ministry is currently in consultations with our SADC member states, to go an extra mile in allowing Namibians to use Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs)… The nation will be informed once the arrangement has been agreed to with SADC member states,” said the minister.
The minister noted that this is only a temporary measure.
Kapofi also said his ministry will now prioritize issuing passports to only citizens with an urgent need to travel until the situation stabilizes. – XINHUA
