Namibia leads Cosassa medal standing on opening day

WINDHOEK, 08 MAY – Namibia won 34 medals on the first day of the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Associations (Cosassa) Athletics Games in Francistown, Botswana on Monday.
These are nine gold medals, 13 silver and 12 bronze while Zimbabwe is currently second with 37 medals of which nine are gold; 11 silver and 17 bronze.
Five countries, Botswana (host), Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia are competing at this year’s competition.
Speaking to Nampa via WhatsApp on Monday, Namibia School Sports Union National Coordinator, Solly Duiker said the team has settled in well in Francistown and are hoping for more good results on the last two days of the championships.
“We are five countries participating in this competition and Namibia has a fewer athletes compared to host Botswana who have 200 while Zimbabwe has 150 athletes, but we are positive of doing well and it will be a blessing in disguise if we finish this competition on first place,” he said.
Duiker added that team Namibia travelled with 88 athletes and finishing in the top two positions is their main goal at the moment despite the number of athletes in their team.
“We have two more crucial day which is tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday where we expect the team to perform better because by now they would have acclimatised well to the weather after the good rest they had since arrival,” Duiker said.
