WINDHOEK, JULY 5 – Self-reliant, dynamic Namibian artists who work in any traditional or new visual media are invited to apply for the opportunity to participate in the Luhamoho Artists’ Workshop to be held from 9 – 23 September 2019 at a venue to be announced, the deadline for submissions is Friday 19 July 2019 at 16h00.
This workshop is a new National Art Gallery of Namibia initiative building up to the Tulipamwe International Artists’ Workshop, 2020, a non-profit making, empowerment project coordinated as a community outreach project, under the auspices of the National Art Gallery of Namibia (since 2014).
A few artists from the Luhamoho workshop will be selected to participate in the Tulipamwe International Artists’ Workshop. While emphasis is on the artists’ creative exploration, Luhamoho much like Tulipamwe supports a view of the artist as someone who gives by sharing knowledge and creative skills. The idea for the project is to invite a group of Namibian artists to work together for a period of 14 days, creating artworks in various media and formats of arts and craft (traditional and contemporary art and craft).
This may include but is not limited to site-specific work, photography, video, painting, weaving, ephemeral work, sculpture and printmaking. The workshop artist is encouraged to respond to the local environment in his/her choice of theme, material and technique. The participating artists will live in a local community for the workshop period and embark on creating artwork in identified areas of the community.
Artists are encouraged to share knowledge and visual art techniques with local artists of the community. Some of the artwork (e.g. site-specific work) may be donated to the community, to contribute to its cultural enrichment. During the workshop, participants will be provided with full board accommodation and informal workspace. During “art talks”, participants will be invited to show and discuss visual material of their recent work or another topic of their choice.
Luhamoho will endeavour to supply a range of basic materials and equipment. Artists are encouraged to work with natural material in the surrounding where the workshop will be held; however, the supply of specialist equipment should be the responsibility of the participant.
Following the workshop, when back in Windhoek, the workshop artists will also be invited to offer a visual presentation of his/her work to artists, students, members of the media and the general public. Digital equipment will be available for this presentation. An exhibition of artworks created at the workshop will be opened at the National Art Gallery of Namibia on Tuesday 24 September 2019. Artworks may be sold for the artists’ benefit.
