RUNDU, 20 JUN – Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) will erect 10 new network towers and also upgrade the existing ones in the Kavango East and West regions, its Corporate Communications Practitioner, John Ekongo said.
Speaking during the mobile giant’s ‘081 everyone’ campaign road show held in Rundu recently, he said the towers will be erected in areas such as Mangetti, Khaudum National Park, Max Makushe, Ncuncuni and Katere.
The 10 new towers to be erected in the two regions are expected to be completed around October, said Ekongo.
He added that this is to make sure that people within those localities are also connected to the network.
“So far, in the vicinity of Rundu, we have done upgrades on existing sites and deployed 4G (fourth-generation wireless) on three sites within the Central Business District of Rundu,” noted Ekongo.
Launched in August 2017, the MTC ‘081 everyone’ project consist of two phases, to upgrade its infrastructure and to build new network sites.
The investment would see an additional 100 000 mobile users added onto the country’s growing mobile network.
Ekongo said the reason why MTC started with the project is because MTC is majority-owned by the State and its efforts are to make sure it complements Government’s efforts in terms of infrastructure development.
Contacted for an update on the ‘081 everyone’ project on Wednesday, Ekongo said “the project is progressing well, although there are some challenges here and there”.
Earlier this year, MTC’s Acting Managing Director, Thinus Smit said 524 new towers will be erected countrywide and most of them will be at farms.
Meanwhile, a total of 63 existing towers have been upgraded from 2G to 3G.
The entire project is estimated to cost N.dollars 1.1 billion.
Kavango West Governor, Sirkka Ausiku earlier this year raised concern on behalf of the regional community over the lack of ICT infrastructure in the region.
