WINDHOEK, 24 JUN – Metcalfe Attorneys on Friday publicly refuted allegations made against suspended Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) Chief Executive Officer, Augustinus Katiti.
Katiti was last week suspended by the NIP board of directors pending disciplinary action after an investigation into the institution’s financial and operational affairs.
In a media statement, Attorney Richard Metcalfe accused NIP’s board of directors of leaking false information about Katiti to the media and the public through social media. This, despite the board’s directive to the suspended CEO not to communicate to the media.
Metcalfe said Katiti’s annual travel costs did not exceed N.dollars 3.5 million, nor has he undertaken any trip to Italy or Austria in his private capacity or on official NIP business.
He further stated that Katiti only travelled once during the whole of the previous financial year, to Johannesburg, South Africa in March 2017 to attend a training workshop.
“He has also not undertaken any trips outside the borders of Namibia in the current financial year,” the attorney stated.
He further said the institution’s operating and capital budgets were approved by the board of directors, and that the institution had never received qualified audited financial statements as a result of misstatements, whether due to fraud or error.
“The contrived allegations against Mr Katiti are based on a series of internal audit reports that were presented to the chairperson of the Audit Risk and Information and Communication Technology Committee as early as July 2017, almost a year ago.”
Metcalfe said as such, Katiti should have been suspended a year ago, if he was in any way implicated in any wrongdoing.
