KEETMANSHOOP, 26 MAY – The Nama people should be united and use their traditional attires and cuisines to generate income for themselves, Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa has said.
She made the remarks at the official opening of the first Nama Cultural Festival at the Westdene Stadium in Keetmanshoop on Friday.
Hanse-Himarwa said Nama people should now spare no effort in building bridges and using culture as a pillar of strength to unite, as during the colonial apartheid era, culture was misused effectively as a dichotomy to divide them.
“Our convergence here must enhance our understanding for each other as one people. The festival must be a hallmark for unity that creates the first conditions for peace, which is a precondition for our development,” she noted.
Hanse-Himarwa said the safeguarding of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage is fundamental to the Nama people’s identity, however, they should be mindful that culture has the potential to reap economic benefits for the people.
“Therefore, we must explore all avenues to capitalise on diverse culture as a strength to market Namibia and to market our products and services.”
Hanse-Himarwa believes that traditional cuisine and attire should not be used only for exhibitions and for showcasing the creative talents and indigenous knowledge of the Nama people, but should be seen as treasures that can be transformed into income generation commodities.
She said on a large scale, this can significantly improve the economy and contribute to nation building.
The Nama Cultural Festival started on Thursday and ends on Sunday.
