KBF hosts successful tourney

WINDHOEK, 08 JUL – The Khomas Boxing Federation (KBF) held a successful boxing development tournament in Windhoek on Saturday.
The tournament, which had seven junior bouts and 22 senior bouts, took place at the Samora Machel Constituency football field and was well attended by local residents, including the councillor, Fanuel Shivute.
Nine clubs from 11 registered with KBF took part in the tournament and boxers from as far afield as Swakopmund also participated.
Several young and upcoming amateur boxers showcased their boxing skills, with numerous standout fights being witnessed by the appreciative crowd.
In the junior category Rebelo Doeseb and Elifas Imene were the first to entertain the crowd, with the latter emerging victorious.
Hubertus Richard and Titus Ihula also kept the crowd on their feet. Ihula retired after being knocked down in the second round.
In the senior category, Erastus Kondjeni suffered a one punch defeat at the hands of Shaningi Petrus.
KBF chairperson Jason Naule said he was happy with the tournament, but lambasted the local business people for failing to support the show.
“The business people in that area do not understand that sports help a lot in these informal areas in terms of creating employment. It also helps reduce crime and provides an opportunity for kids who want to get involved to reach the right people.”
Naule called on small and medium enterprises to support sporting events in cash or kind as people also support their businesses during the tournament.
The chairperson further paid tribute to the boxers for displaying top quality fights, saying this will encourage more people to join the sport.
He added that when other towns outside Khomas heard about the tournament, they asked to be part of it, hence the invitation to the Swakopmund-based boxers.
Naule applauded the councillor of the area for supporting them by providing tents and chairs free of charge.
Councillor Shivute welcomed the tournament and told Nampa he would lobby the KBF to have it in the constituency as often as possible as it keeps youths away from delinquency.
“I am busy lobbying various people to build a proper community hall in the area so that we are able to host such sporting activities and other entertainment events. This helps build a stronger, united community. It also reduces crime and creates employment,” he said.
