WINDHOEK, 27 JUL – The July Handicap organised by Professor Supporters Club will take place at the Okahatjipara Turf Club in Okondjatu on Saturday.
One of the organisers, Timo Mujeu told Nampa on Thursday this year’s competition attracted more than 70 horses and everything is in place for the races.
“We are expecting excitement in Okondjatu as horse racing is becoming a top sport in Namibia,” he said.
He added that they made provision for extra horses in the Nambred division, which usually caters for eight horses per race.
“We are going to use starting gates for the first time in the competition,” he also noted.
Ryno Angermund from Rehoboth’s Angermund Racing Club said their club is sending four horses to Okondjatu.
He said Prince de Lago, the winner of the recent Winter Cup in Rehoboth, will take part in the competition.
“We are well prepared, our horses are in good condition and ready for the challenge come Saturday,” Angermund said.
Eamon Freygang from Naris Turf Club confirmed that the club will send five horses, adding that they expect their horses to do well.
“They stand a good chance to win because of their recent good performance in the Winter Cup,” said Freygang, who listed Kings Kitten, Rockina and Surreptitious in the group to the July Handicap.
Seasonal horses like Professor, General, Katjutju, Okatenda, Von Trotha, Kapenailonga, Chase Me and Freedom Fighter have also been registered in the respective divisions.
The owner of the Katjutju Supporters Club, Iritjiua Murangi, lost one of his horses that he had been preparing for the competition when the horse was stabbed by an unknown person recently.
“But I still stand firm and proud and I will take my other horse, Katjutju, to Okondjatu,” said Murangi.
The Professor Supporters Club is a social club which is hosting the July Handicap. This year’s event is the fourth and last year’s was held in Gobabis.
