JERUSALEM, March 24 — Israeli Air Force received on Wednesday a new huge inflatable missile detection system designed to float at high altitudes and detect airborne threats, the Israeli military said.
The Elevated Sensor advance warning and detection system was transferred from the defense ministry to the Air Force, where it will be prepared for operational use, a military spokesperson said in a statement.
The system, resembling a giant zeppelin, was developed in cooperation with ELTA, a subsidiary of state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries, and TCOM, a U.S. aerostat company, according to the Israeli military.
“The system will enable advanced detection and warning of various threats and will be an additional element in generating a full picture of air control for the defense of Israeli airspace,” the statement read.
The Elevated Sensor is deployed in northern Israel and installed on one of the world’s largest aerostats, according to the statement.
Israeli Air Force chief Amikam Norkin said in the statement that the system will help the Air Force tackle “significant challenges in northern Israel” as it “provides the Israeli Air Force a more advanced and precise ability to defend the skies of Israel.”
The Elevated Sensor system is one of Israel’s four operational defense layers. The other three are the mobile all-weather Iron Dome defense system, the medium-to-long-range David’s Sling aerial defense system, and the long-range Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 anti-missile systems. – XINHUA
