WINDHOEK, 26 APR – As the battle for the heart and soul of the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) takes shape, Okakara Constituency Councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu says he is the right candidate to revive and expand the party.
Speaking to Nampa during an interview on Tuesday, Kandorozu vowed to double Nudo’s Parliamentary seats, should he be elected as its president.
“Our position is that when we take over the party leadership, we have no choice but to increase the seats in Parliament. Nudo is here to stay,” said Kandorozu.
To achieve this, the party will open its arms to become more inclusive.
“We want members from all spectrums to join us. We will have outreach programmes to engage with Namibians, whether they are our members or not,” he said.
Asked what the Nudo agenda was, he replied: “Our representation is more of the blue collar workers, the cleaners, the security guards and the forgotten ones. Most of our members are people living at the periphery of the urban set-up.”
Kandorozu also promised to establish a fully-fledged business wing for the party and to fight for nationalisation of fishing rights.
“Currently the fishing quotas just benefit a select few. We are going to advocate for the fishing rights to be given to all 14 regions. The regional offices will then distribute to all constituencies and constituencies will distribute to all villages and settlement,” he proposed.
In the congress run-up, Kandorozu’s slate, which trades as ‘Team 100 per cent VK’, derived from his initials, has come under the spotlight, with some feeling that it “glorifies Kandorozu”.
“The party is bigger than us. That’s why we chose this name. And the name is not new. It derives from 2015 during my election campaign in Okakara,” he responded.
His team deliberately chose to exclude the party’s name from their campaign, he added.
“We don’t want Nudo’s name dragged through the mud. We want to make sure that when somebody insults us, they do so without including the party name,” he said.
He added that he is an ordinary member of the slate and has no monopoly whatsoever over his running mates.
The 43-year-old Kandorozu will have to beat competition from Utjiua Miunjangue for the Nudo presidency when the party holds its elective congress.
The positions of vice president (VP), secretary general (SG), deputy secretary general and treasurer, as well as that of the national council chairperson and deputy will also be contested.
For the position of VP, ‘Team 100 per cent VK’ has academic Professor Jekura Kavari as its candidate while Meundju Jahanika, the current SG will seek to retain his post.
The Miunjangue-led camp has Aminius Constituency Councillor, Peter Kazongominja for VP, while Windhoek Councillor Joseph Kauandenge is vying for party SG.
The Nudo congress is slated for 25-26 May 2018.
