KAMPALA, Dec. 3 -- Heavy rains have cut off some roads in parts of rural Uganda, leaving travelers stranded. The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) said in a statement Tuesday that Pakwach Bridge that connects with West Nile was closed after a section of the road was covered with water weeds and debris due to floods. It advised the public to use alternative routes as teams have been dispatched to remove the debris. In western Uganda, the bridge deck of Kazinga Channel Bridge on Ishaka-Katunguru-Kasese road has been temporarily fixed and opened to traffic. "The temporary remedy is able to allow all vehicles to use the bridge at the moment as we finalize emergency procurement for short term works and the plan for permanent works," the UNRA said. Martin Owor, commissioner for disaster management in the Office of the Prime Minister, said in a disaster situation report for Dec. 3 that in the eastern part of the country, a massive landslide in Bududa district left two people dead and five others missing. He said disaster management teams have been dispatched to the affected districts. "Once again, people are advised not to walk, ride or drive across any flooded road section or bridge, and to keep away from river banks and steep slopes," he said. In September, the Uganda National Meteorological Authority issued an alert about the country experiencing floods and landslides, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property as the second major rain season peaks for the next four months.
