WINDHOEK, June 19 – The Goethe-Institut Namibia, in collaboration with the Pan Africa ILGA, proudly presents “Spectrum of Love: Films and Talks on LGBTQI+ Realities” on June 25, 2024, at 6 pm. This event, taking place at the Goethe-Institut Namibia, will feature an evening of enlightening short films and a thought-provoking panel discussion centered on LGBTQI+ rights in Namibia.
“Spectrum of Love: Films and Talks on LGBTQI+ Realities” will showcase three poignant short films: *Mukumo* (Namibia), *The Drag Academy* (Kenya), and *My Story/Don’t Kill Me* (Uganda).
*Mukumo* tells the story of a queer boy facing bullying and judgment from his peers and father. The film captures his journey as he decides to stand firm and embrace his identity.
*The Drag Academy* provides a glimpse into the lives of drag kings in Nairobi, exploring their experiences in what is known as the DRAG ACADEMY. This film challenges and engages with themes of queer feminism across Africa.
My Story/Don’t Kill Me follows Jude Masaba and lesbian Petua Wegosasa in the Mbale district of Eastern Uganda. It delves into the everyday struggles and realities of the sexual and gender-diverse community in rural Uganda.
Following the film screenings, a panel discussion will be moderated by Arlana Shikongo from the Pan Africa ILGA. The discussion will address the implications of the proposed marriage bill and other relevant legal developments concerning LGBTQI+ rights in Namibia.
The panel will feature:
– Yolande Engelbrecht, Coordinator and Paralegal at the Legal Assistance Centre Namibia
– Florence /Khaxas, Executive Director of the Young Feminists Movement (Y-Fem) Namibia Trust
– Linda Baumann, a recipient of the prestigious Feather Award
These esteemed panellists, along with other queer voices and experts, will facilitate a comprehensive dialogue, providing insights into the challenges and opportunities for LGBTQI+ rights in Namibia. Their diverse perspectives aim to foster an inclusive discussion on this sensitive topic.
Entrance to “Spectrum of Love: Films and Talks on LGBTQI+ Realities” is free. Attendees will also enjoy complimentary popcorn and a surprise performance, promising an engaging and memorable evening.
