WINDHOEK, 06 NOV –The Editors Forum of Namibia (EFN) on Tuesday urged media houses to maintain the highest standard as prescribed in the preamble of its code of ethics and conduct.
This was contained to in a media statement availed to Nampa, in which the EFN condemned the online publication by the Informanté newspaper of a photo of murder accused Ivan Pitt of Swakopmund, who was found hanging from the ceiling in the garage of the house where he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Lindie Prinsloo.
The statement said although the newspaper is not a signatory to the EFN, its published picture contains content that constitutes unethical and insensitive journalism, which brings the Namibian media in general in disrepute with its readership and online audience.
“Irrespective of what the deceased did, he was a father, son and family member loved by those close to him. The Informanté post did not give care and consideration to the feelings and dignity of the bereaved family, neither was a prominent warning given that the content is graphic and inappropriate for certain audiences,” the statement added.
It further stated that the media should exercise care and consideration in matters involving the private lives and concerns of individuals.
The EFN further emphasised the importance of responsible journalism, in which journalists maintain the highest standards, safeguard credibility and keep the trust of the public.
