WINDHOEK, MAY 20 – The late former Namibian Vice President Nickey Iyambo, who passed away yesterday a day before he could celebrate his 83rd birthday, will be laid to rest at Namibia’s Heroes Acre, President Hage Geingob announced.
Iyambo was born on 20 May 1936 at Onayena in the Oshikoto Region and joined the liberation struggle in 1960. He went into exile in 1964, and served the liberation movement in different capacities, including as SWAPO Representative to the NOrdic Countries from 1966 – 1971.
He obtained a Master’s Degree in political science from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and completed his degree in medicine at the same University. In the 1980’s he served as SWAPO Head of Military Medical Service among other numerous capacities.
Iyambo served the health, mines, safety and security, agriculture as well as veterans affairs’ ministries before being appointed as Vice President in March 2015.
However, due to ill health, Iyambo served that office until February 8 2018. Among his stellar accolades is a Most Brilliant Order of the Sun First Class, which he was awarded by Geingob on Heroes Day in 2014. – firstname.lastname@example.org
