OTJIWARONGO, 26 JUNE – The cleaner who allegedly stole food from the hostel at Karundu Primary School in Otjiwarongo appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of housebreaking and theft.
Gregory Xamiseb, 28, and his 27-year-old accomplice, Virgel Uwiteb appeared before Otjiwarongo Magistrate Eduard Kesslau in connection with the theft of, amongst others, beef and game carcasses and boxes of fish and chicken from the hostel’s kitchen on Saturday night.
They were arrested at Xamiseb’s house in the Ombili informal settlement on Sunday after the stolen food was recovered from the house by members of the Namibian Police Force.
Magistrate Kesslau on Tuesday explained their right to engage a private lawyer; apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Directorate of Legal Aid in the Ministry of Justice; or defend themselves.
Both opted to defend themselves in court.
Their case was then postponed to Wednesday for pleading.
Public prosecutor Anna Amukugo represented the State in the matter.
The Namibian Police Force’s spokesperson for the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha on Monday told Nampa learners and teachers on Sunday noticed that the kitchen had been broken into and they contacted the police.
The police found that the chicken, beef, game, fish and cheese meant to feed 250 learners had been stolen.
They tracked the suspects’ footprints to the house in the Ombili informal settlement.
“Carcasses were found inside his house and some food items recovered from the houses of people they had sold it to that same night,” said Mbeha.
The stolen food is worth more than N$ 10 000.
