VIENNA, Jan. 22 -- Austria needs to expand cashless payments, where China is considered a pioneer, according to a report published by Osterreich Werbung, Austria's national tourist office, on its official website Wednesday. The new publication, Science of the Smart Guest, provides an overview of the global trends in tourism, where China is an example of cashless payment transactions. While Sweden is the European pioneer in card payment, China is already one step ahead and prefers to pay with a smartphone, said the report. The report finds that two things are important to Chinese guests on vacation: WiFi and the possibility of mobile payment. "If we offer these payment systems to our Chinese guests in Austria, it is a sign of appreciation, and it means increased convenience for our guests and ultimately leads to higher expenses," said Emanuel Lehner-Telic, manager of Osterreich Werbung's Asian region. In addition to expanding mobile payments, the tourist office also wants to use digitalization as a tool to create sustainable tourism in Austria. Different services that a vacation includes, such as travel, accommodation, catering, and activities, would be brought together in one contact point and thus create a "holistic experience" for tourists, said Petra Stolba, Osterreich Werbung managing director.
