WINDHOEK, 01 NOV – Namibia Premier League (NPL) champions and Football Association Cup winners for the 2017/18 season, African Stars has shown interest in competing in the 2018/19 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.
The league is an annual club football competition which sees top club sides in Africa compete amongst each other.
African Stars Administrator, Lesley Kozonguizi told Nampa on Wednesday they have indicated to CAF their interest of competing in the 55th edition of Africa’s premier club football tournament.
“At the moment we have not entered into the competition but have indicated our interest in wanting to compete. We are still waiting for communication from CAF to tell us how much to pay for registration, then take things from there,” he said.
Kozonguizi added that they want to test the water in competing in the league, but financial constraints might become a big obstacle.
“If we get confirmation from CAF, we will then know how much is needed.”
He therefore called on every Namibian to come on board and help them raise funds.
“As you know, it’s expensive to compete in continental tournaments but as Namibians we want to represent our country in this competition.”
The first leg of the 2018/19 CAF Champions League preliminary rounds will be played over the weekend of 26 and 27 November, while the second leg will be over the weekend of 04 and 05 December 2018.
The winner of the CAF Champions League walks away with about N$36 000 000 (U.S. dollars 2.5 million) and also earns a berth to compete at the International Federation of Association Football Club World Cup.
This tournament is contested between the champion clubs from all six continental confederations. This winner faces the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup in the following season’s CAF Super Cup.
