COTONOU, Jan. 11– Beninese President Patrice Talon expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of voting operations for the legislative and municipal elections, which began Sunday morning across the country.
“I see that voting has started well. Citizens have turned out in large numbers to fulfill their civic duty, and I hope that everyone will have the chance to exercise their right to vote before the end of the day,” he told reporters after casting his ballot.
“Today marks the beginning of a better life, and our hope is that each day will be better than the last. This is the dynamic we will follow from now on.”
Since Sunday morning, nearly 7.8 million eligible voters in Benin have been casting their ballots at 17,000 polling stations nationwide.
Although some polling stations experienced short delays, mainly due to the delivery of election materials, voting has so far proceeded without major incidents.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the body responsible for organizing elections in Benin, the legislative and municipal elections are scheduled to last 10 hours. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
