SWAKOPMUND, Aug. 17 – A petition, regarding the housing backlog at Swakopmund, which was handed over to the town’s municipality on 8 August by beneficiaries on the Master Housing Waiting List of the Build Together Programme and Mass Housing Scheme, is now in the hands of the town’s management committee.
The beneficiaries insisted on feedback by 25 August, but were informed by the municipality that the petition was forwarded to the management committee meeting, which is scheduled for 14 September 2017, and only thereafter feedback will be provided.
This, according to the aggrieved group’s spokesperson, Mr Abisai Teofilus, did not sit well with the residents as they are suspect that a cat-and-mouse game is being played by the Swakopmund municipality. A letter requesting feedback on the 15th of September, a day after the management committee meeting, was handed over to the municipality yesterday.
In the petition, the disgruntled residents uttered their dismay regarding delays in the allocation of houses to beneficiaries on the waiting list and demanded for the process to sped up.
“What is the use of mass housing homes standing abandoned for many years without people occupying it,” it was asked in the petition. The town’s municipality is also accused of spreading propaganda and lies. The issue of granting building contracts (tenders) to foreign companies was also fiercely raised in the petition, with the residents noting that the town has its own qualified builders who can do the job much cheaper.
Another thorn in their flesh is the fact that people whose names allegedly do not appear on the waiting list are being awarded houses. The main objective of the petition says Teofilus, is for the municipality to “wake up” and speed up the process, as resident’s patience is running out. “Our people are fed-up of living in backyard shacks and renting outside rooms.
